What the Official Website Does Not Say
Bank officers still ask for the UAM or the old MSME certificate
This happens constantly, especially at branch-level desks in smaller towns. The Udyam Registration Certificate has been the only valid MSME credential since July 2020. If a bank officer tells you it is not the right format, they are mistaken. Ask them to check their own bank's MSME circular. You are right. They are not.
NIC code selection will confuse you, and the portal will not warn you
NIC (National Industrial Classification) codes classify your industry. Picking the wrong one does not void your certificate, but it can affect automatic routing to certain scheme benefits. Pick the code that matches your primary revenue-generating activity, not a secondary one. Five minutes of research here is worth it.
Re-registration is not optional for old UAM holders
Banks and scheme portals verify Udyam numbers against the live database. A UAM number that was never migrated to Udyam shows up as invalid. This has caused genuine loan rejections. If you registered under Udyog Aadhaar before July 2020 and never migrated, you need to re-register from scratch at the Udyam portal.
Third-party agents are common and completely unnecessary
Search for udyam registration and you will find paid services ranking alongside the official portal. There is no advantage to using an agent. The registration requires your Aadhaar OTP, so your CA or agent cannot even complete it without you present. The only portal you need is udyamregistration.gov.in.
OwnBiz Clarity Score
Independent assessment across four dimensions.
Application simplicity
8/10
Genuinely simple for proprietors. Slightly more complex for companies needing authorised signatory details.
Real-world bank acceptance
6/10
Certificate is valid everywhere, but branch-level officer awareness is inconsistent, especially in Tier 3 cities.
Benefit clarity
7/10
The portal says Udyam is mandatory for schemes but does not show you which ones or how to access them.
Speed of benefit access
7/10
Certificate issues immediately. Downstream loan approvals still depend on the individual scheme's own timeline.
Composite
7.0/10
Excellent for a government registration process. Gaps are in communication, not the process itself.
Step-by-Step Registration Process
- 1
Go directly to the official portal
Open udyamregistration.gov.in. Do not use any other site. Click "For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME" if this is a fresh registration. If you have an old UAM, use the "For those who have UAM" option instead.
- 2
Enter your Aadhaar number and validate
For proprietorships, use the proprietor's Aadhaar. For companies and LLPs, use the authorised signatory's Aadhaar. An OTP is sent to the mobile number linked to that Aadhaar. This is the only authentication step — there is no username or password to create.
- 3
Validate PAN
Enter your business PAN (or personal PAN for proprietorships). The portal pulls your ITR data automatically for turnover verification. If you have not filed ITR yet, you can still proceed and self-declare turnover for the current year.
- 4
Fill in business details
Enter your business name, type of organisation, date of commencement, bank account number and IFSC, and the main place of business with district and state. If you have a GSTIN, enter it here and the portal will link it automatically.
- 5
Select your NIC code
The portal links to the NIC 2008 code list. Find the 5-digit code that best matches your primary business activity. Manufacturing and services have different code ranges. Take five minutes here — the right code ensures correct scheme routing later.
- 6
Enter investment and turnover figures
Use figures from your last filed ITR if available. For new businesses, self-declare estimates. The portal auto-links GSTIN turnover if your GSTIN is provided. Be accurate — misrepresenting category (Micro vs Small) can affect scheme eligibility.
- 7
Submit and download your certificate
Your Udyam Registration Certificate generates immediately with a permanent Udyam Registration Number (URN) in the format UDYAM-XX-00-0000000. Download the PDF and save a copy somewhere accessible — banks and scheme portals will ask for it repeatedly.
Common Problems and Fixes
Aadhaar OTP not received
The OTP goes to the mobile number seeded in your Aadhaar record, not your current phone number. Check which number is linked by visiting uidai.gov.in. If the number is wrong or old, update it at the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra before attempting registration.
PAN validation fails
This usually means a name mismatch between your PAN record and your Aadhaar. Log in to the Income Tax portal (incometax.gov.in) and check the exact name spelling on your PAN. It must match your Aadhaar name character for character.
GSTIN not auto-linking
The Udyam portal links GSTIN only if the PAN on your GST registration matches the PAN you entered. If you registered GST under a different PAN (common in partnership transitions), enter your GSTIN manually and the system will attempt a secondary match.
"Enterprise already exists" error on re-registration
Old UAM holders see this when they try the fresh registration link. Use the "For those who have UAM" option on the portal homepage instead. Enter your UAM number and Aadhaar to migrate and upgrade to a Udyam certificate.
Wrong NIC code after submission
You can update your Udyam registration details by logging in through the "Update Udyam Registration" link using your URN and Aadhaar OTP. NIC code changes are allowed and take effect immediately in the database.
Bank says turnover does not match for loan eligibility
The Udyam portal pulls ITR data. If you filed a revised ITR after registration, the portal figures may lag. Log back in and update your turnover figures manually using the update option.

Check Scheme Eligibility →Frequently Asked Questions
Is Udyam Registration mandatory or optional for bank loans?
Optional in law, mandatory in practice. Almost every PSU bank MSME loan product — including Mudra Kishore, Mudra Tarun, Stand-Up India, and CGTMSE-backed loans — requires a valid Udyam Registration Certificate at the application stage. Without it, your file is incomplete.
Can I register if my business has no GSTIN or ITR filed?
Yes. GSTIN linkage is automatic if you have one, but not required. For ITR, you self-declare turnover if you have not filed yet. New businesses with zero history can still register by entering estimated figures.
What is the difference between UAM and Udyam?
UAM (Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum) was the old registration system, shut down in July 2020. Udyam is the replacement. UAM certificates are not accepted by banks or scheme portals as of FY 2025-26. If you only have a UAM number, re-register at udyamregistration.gov.in.
How do I verify if my Udyam certificate is genuine?
Go to udyamregistration.gov.in and use the "Print/Verify Udyam Certificate" option. Enter your URN and registered mobile OTP. If the certificate is valid, it will display your full registration details live from the government database.
My CA is charging ₹1,500 to do the Udyam registration. Is that normal?
It is common, but not necessary. The registration requires your personal Aadhaar OTP, which means your CA cannot complete it without you present anyway. Sit with them for 20 minutes or do it yourself. The portal is in English and Hindi and requires no technical knowledge.
Can a shop owner, freelancer, or tuition centre register on Udyam?
Yes. Any entity in manufacturing or services is eligible — retail shops, coaching institutes, beauty salons, repair workshops, and freelancers all qualify. Eligibility is based on investment in plant and machinery or equipment, plus annual turnover.
Does the Udyam certificate expire?
No. The Udyam Registration Number is permanent and requires no renewal. You should update your certificate if your investment or turnover crosses into a higher category, which changes your classification from Micro to Small or Small to Medium.
